PFA President awarded Australia Police Medal in Queens Birthday Honours

The awarding of the Australia Police Medal (APM) to Police Federation of Australia National President Senior Sergeant Vince Kelly from the Northern Territory was announced yesterday in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. 

National Police Service Medal (NPSM) Announced by Government

The PFA has applauded the joint announcement of the NPSM by Ministers Joe Ludwig and Brendan O'Connor.  This announcement brings the commitment by the Government to the PFA in the lead up to the 2007 Federal Election a step closer.  To view a copy of the Ministers' Press Release click here.  Further details about the medal will be announced in due course.

 

PFA Welcomes Minister O'Connor's Announcement of Enhanced Workers Compensation Benefits for Australian Police Serving Overseas

The PFA has been lobbying successive Federal Governments to provide enhanced workers compensation and rehabilitation benefits to Australian Police serving overseas including appearing before several Parliamentary Inquiries.  Minister O’Connor has advised the PFA (click here to view letter) that new interim arrangements will allow Australian Police to access benefits similar to defence force personnel.   

Decision of Immigration Minister to deport Cop Killer Welcomed by the PFA

The Immigration Minister has notified Motekiai Taufahema of his intention to consider cancelling his visa under Section 501A(2) of the Migration Act. Taufahema was sentenced to 11 years for the manslaughter of Senior Constable Glenn McEnallay in March 2002.   For the Minister’s Press Release click here.

 

Emergency Services Concept Vehicle

The National Safety Agency recently briefed the Police Federation of Australia Executive and demonstrated the Emergency Services Concept Vehicle which was developed in Melbourne.  For more information on the vehicle, click here.

PFA invited to appear before House of Representatives Standing Committee

The PFA has been invited to appear before the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family, Housing and Youth inquiry into the impact of violence on young Australians.  At the hearing on 10 March the PFA will expand on their proposal for an "Australian Crime Prevention - Innovative Grants Program".  To view the Submission to the Inquiry click here.
