Two Government Ministers Misled on Spectrum For Public Safety

The Police Federation is convinced that Australian Government Ministers Conroy and McClelland have been badly misled into thinking that they can find a substitute for the 700 MHz Digital Dividend band of radio spectrum for police and emergency services. And the Australian Communications and Media Authority now concedes that reserving spectrum for public safety agencies will not cost the Federal Government revenue when the spectrum goes to auction.

Police Federation Proud to Have Achieved National Police Service Medal in 2011

While the notion of a National Police Service Medal has been in the discussion phase for almost 20 years, it was when the Police Federation of Australia re-invigorated the proposal at the Police Commissioner’s Conference in 2006 that the issue again came to life. The PFA then went on to seek a commitment leading up to the 2007 Federal election from each political party for the medal.

PFA Gobsmacked at Neglect of Public Safety

Having campaigned for a small slice of the 700 MHz Digital Dividend for police and emergency services, the PFA is astonished that a Federal Labor Government is putting money, and the demands of the three big Telcos, before public safety.  The Attorney-General, supposedly responsible for emergency services in this country, and Senator Conroy told Police Commissioners and fire and ambulance authorities and the PFA in May that none of the mobile broadband 700 MHz spectrum would be reserved for emergency services. This is not a decision we are going to take lying down.
